We have the honour to acknowledge your letter of the 6th. instant No. 4983/10 transmitting copy of a

letter from His Majesty's Canadian Secretary of State for x-

-ternal Affairs, stating that under the Canadian Customs Tariff

how in force, Coment from Hongkong would not enter Canada under

the preferential rate of duty, but would be subject to the duty

under the General Tariff.

This is of course, so at present, but Sec-

-tion 3 of the Canadian Customs Tariff of 1907, paragraph (1)

states that the British Preferential Tariff shell apply to goods, the produce or manufacture of certain British countries, in-

-cluding (8) the Straits Settlements and (N) any other British

Colony or possession admitted to the benefit of the British

Preferential Tariff in Canada in the manner hereinafter provid-

-eda

and clause 4 further states:-

"The Governor in Council may, by order in

"Council extend the benefit of the British Preferenti-

*-al Tariff to any British country not named in

*paragraph (1) of section 3*.

We have therefore the honour to enquire

if it is not possible to have the Colony of Hongkong included

inthe list of British Colonies admitted to the benefit of the

Preferential Tariff.

The matter is of great importance to this
